Zarephath

Zair´uh-fath

A port city on the Phoenician coast at modern Sarafand, eight miles south of Sidon and fourteen miles north of Tyre. In the ninth century BCE the prophet Elijah received the hospitality of a poor widow of Zarephath and miraculously replenished her depleted grain and revived her dying son (1Kgs 17:8-24). Centuries later Jesus referred to Elijah’s visit (Luke 4:25-27).
