A large carrion-eating bird. A figurative reference to a vulture is offered in (Hos 8:1). Four species occur in Israel: (1) the bearded vulture (Lev 11:13), (2) the Egyptian eagle, probably corresponding to the carrion vulture (Lev 11:18; Deut 14:17), (3) the black vulture (Deut 14:12), and (4) the griffon vulture, for which the NRSV uses the term “eagle” (Deut 32:11; Ps 103:5; Prov 30:17).
