Trachonitis

Trak´uh-ni´tis

A Greek name in the NT for a 370-square-mile rocky, yet potentially fertile lava plateau located northeast of Palestine between Galilee and Damascus (referred to in the OT as the land of Bashan). Originally a part of Herod’s kingdom, it became the territory of Philip (Luke 3:1) and later was governed by Herod Agrippa I. Two NT cities in the region were Caesarea Philippi and Bethsaida.
