town clerk

Lit., “scribe,” as the Greek term is translated everywhere in the NT except in Acts 19:35

An official in the Greco-Roman world who had significant authority and responsibility under the Roman system of government. These officials were responsible for the proper form and wording for decrees that were presented to assemblies of the people, and they appear to have been responsible for keeping order and preventing illegal assemblies. Such a person was one of the chief characters in an account of a riot at Ephesus in which Paul was involved (Acts 19:35-41).
