The upper portion of the leg. 1 The right thigh of the animal that constituted the Israelites’ well-being offerings given to priests as a stipend in addition to the animal’s breast (Lev 7:32-34). These portions could be eaten by both the priests and their households outside the sanctuary area (Lev 10:14). 2 Where one placed a hand during an oath. Oaths were made by placing one’s hand “under the thigh” of another who makes a request (Gen 24:2; Gen 24:9; Gen 47:29). Punishment from God for breaking such an oath might include the death of one’s offspring or the fate of dying childless.
