Suhk´uhth; Heb., “booths,” “tents,” or “temporary dwellings”
1 A town in the Jordan Valley on the OT “Way of the Plain” (2Sam 18:23). Jacob returned from the east to Shechem by way of Succoth after his meeting with Esau (Gen 33:17). When Gideon was driving the Midianites out of Esdraelon, he asked the inhabitants of Succoth to give nourishment to his three hundred warriors and later punished them brutally for refusing to do so (Judg 8:5-16). See also (1Kgs 7:46; 2Chr 4:17; Ps 60:6; Ps 108:7). 2 The first stopping place on the exodus route (Exod 12:37; Num 33:5-6). The name may perhaps indicate a merely temporary encampment.
