Star of Bethlehem

The star that guided the magi to the infant Jesus at Bethlehem (Matt 2:1-12). The tradition of a heavenly sign appearing about the time of Jesus’s birth was probably seen by Matthew as a fulfillment of certain OT texts (Num 24:17; Isa 60:3). These were then understood as messianic promises and as an indication of the universal significance of Jesus.
