squad

A group of four soldiers. The term is found in (Acts 12:4; John 19:23), where Peter was placed in the custody of four such groups, one for each of the three-hour night watches. Normally, one squad would be sufficient, one person standing guard on each of the watches while the other three slept. Apparently Peter was thought to need especially careful guarding.
