Shema


Shuh-mah´; Heb., “Hear you . . .”

The name of and first Hebrew word of the classical Jewish declaration of faith found in (Deut 6:4), which reads literally, “Hear you, Israel, Yahweh our God, Yahweh is one.” Jesus identified the Shema as the first commandment in the law (Mark 12:29).
