school

An institution outside the home in which teachers instruct students. The OT gives little direct information about schools, but priests had to preside over a complex ritual, teach Israel’s traditions, and instruct the people who came to the Temple, so it seems likely that priests were trained in Temple schools. The kings, nobles, and high officials of Israel would also have needed training (1Kgs 12:8-10; 1Kgs 11:20; 2Kgs 10:6). In addition, the OT often seems to assume a high rate of literacy on the part of the common people (Deut 6:9; Deut 31:12-13; Judg 8:14). In Luke, Jesus is portrayed as reading from scripture in the synagogue (Luke 4:16-20). In Acts, Paul says that he was educated in Jerusalem with Gamaliel (Acts 22:3).
