rose

A general term for a colorful flower, the specific identification of which is often dependent on context. The Phoenician rose is one of the true roses growing wild in Palestine. A thorny bush bearing many blossoms, it grows well at higher altitudes and therefore is probably the rose of the mountains in (2Esd 2:19). The rose of Sharon (Song 2:1) is probably not a true rose, but rather a bright red tuliplike flower.
