An island off the southwest tip of Asia Minor (1Macc 15:23; Acts 21:1). In biblical times this small island republic was a cultural center and a center of higher education. It was also known for its healthful climate. Paul passed Rhodes on his sea journey from Ephesus to Tyre (Acts 21:1).
