Rephaim, Valley of

The broad valley or plain southwest of Jerusalem, modern Baqa. The boundary between the tribal lands of Judah and Benjamin went up the Hinnom Valley from Jerusalem, passing the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim, to the Waters of Nephtoah (springs of Lifta today), northwest of Jerusalem (Josh 15:8; Josh 18:16). The Philistines encamped in the Valley of Rephaim, and David met them there in battle (2Sam 5:18; 2Sam 5:22; 2Sam 23:13). It was known for its fertility (Isa 17:5).
