In the Israelite legal codes (Lev 25:23-34) the right of Israelite landowners to regain property that had been sold. Provisions were made for various means through which the land could be reclaimed: a relative could purchase the land (Jer 32:6-15; Ruth 4:1-4), the original owner could buy it back (Lev 25:26-27; cf. vv. Lev 25:14-16), or it would automatically revert to the previous owner every fifty years (the Jubilee Year).
