1 A vertical beam, usually of wood, that served as part of a frame from which a door or a gate was hung. When Samson took revenge on the Gazites, he carried off not only the gate, but the posts as well (Judg 16:3), thus leaving the town defenseless until they could be replaced. One not permitted entry could stand at the gatepost and observe what occurred inside (Ezek 46:2). 2 The position occupied by persons in pursuit of their duties, whether king (1Kgs 20:24), priest (2Chr 7:6), or watchman (Isa 21:8).
