pestle

A crushing instrument used in a vessel (mortar) to grind grain, spices, or condiments; it was usually short, hand-held, and made of wood or stone. It is used metaphorically in (Prov 27:22) for the impossibility of eliminating fools’ weakness, since it belongs irreducibly to their nature.
