partridge

A medium-sized, stout-bodied game bird. The most frequent species of the partridge is the chukar partridge, a medium-sized game bird with red legs and red beak that lives in rocky terrain. Its typical cackling voice is similar to that of a clucking hen. When chased, it prefers to run, and it only flies short distances. In (1Sam 26:20) Saul’s pursuit of David is compared to a partridge hunt. In (Jer 17:11), the partridge is accused of stealing other birds’ young.
