marble

A metamorphic rock composed of extremely compact crystallized limestone. Its veined and varicolored appearance made it highly desirable for architectural decoration and artistic use. Biblical use attests its functions in architecture (“marble pillars” and floors in Esth 1:6) and decoration (material gathered by David for use in the Temple, 1Chr 29:2). In (Rev 18:12), marble is described as one of the precious goods no longer salable by merchants when Babylon is destroyed.
