Indications of property boundaries, whether erected (as boundary stones) or natural and recognized by mutual agreement. They were not to be moved (Deut 19:14; Deut 27:17) and doing so was a symbol of irresponsible deceit (Hos 5:10), greed (Job 24:2), and abuse (Prov 23:10). This biblical respect for ancestral property reflected similar concern in Babylonian, Egyptian, and later, Greek and Roman law. International markers were frequently elaborately inscribed stones.
