judgment seat

The judicial bench of a city court in the Roman Empire, also sometimes called a “tribunal” or “throne.” Jesus was put on trial before Pilate “while he was sitting on the judgment seat” (Matt 27:19). The Gospel of John locates Pilate’s judgment seat “at a place called The Stone Pavement, or in Hebrew Gabbatha” (John 19:1). The term “judgment seat” is used as an eschatological symbol by Paul in (Rom 14:10, “the judgment seat of God”) and (2Cor 5:10 “the judgment seat of Christ”).
