Viscid sweetener produced by bees. Biblical references include those to domestic or cultivated honey (2Chr 31:5) and wild honey recovered from among rocks (Deut 32:13), from trees (1Sam 14:25-26), or even from an animal carcass (Judg 14:8-9). It was basic fare in the wilderness (“locusts and wild honey,” Mark 1:6), and it symbolizes both rich productive land (Exod 3:17), deceitful enticement (Prov 5:3), and the ultimate in sweetness (Ps 119:103). Though frequently used as a sacrifice material, it was forbidden as part of burnt offerings (Lev 2:11).
