The male (female, hind) of the red deer, viewed as clean (Deut 12:15; Deut 12:22; Deut 14:5; Deut 15:22). Its need for water is a metaphor for human longing for God (Ps 42:1) and its jumps are a model of healthy life (Isa 35:6), but without pasture it symbolizes hopeless confusion (Lam 1:6).
