Geth-sem´uh-nee; Heb., “oil press”
The site mentioned twice (Mark 14:32; Matt 26:36) where Jesus prayed in lonely anguish just before his public betrayal and subsequent arrest there. Mark and Matthew refer to a “place” called Gethsemane and imply it was near the Mount of Olives. (Heb 5:7-8) interprets the events in Gethsemane as proof of the “reverent submission” and “obedience” that formed a prelude to Jesus’s perfection.
