Advice, human or divine. The city of Abel had a reputation for sound counsel (2Sam 20:18). Although private individuals gave advice, professional advisers also existed. They included diviners like Balaam, courtiers (Joseph, Daniel), parents, and teachers. In wisdom literature, the word for “counsel” became a technical term (Jer 18:18; Prov 8:14).
