A large container, usually square with a hinged lid. King Jehoash (Joash) circumvented prior priestly laggardliness in repairing the Temple by commanding the priest Jehoida to build a chest into which worshipers would directly deposit religious donations and from which professional craftsmen would be paid (2Kgs 12:10-11; 2Chr 24:8-11).
