Metal rings connected in series. Made of various metals both base and precious, they were used in ancient Israel for decorative purposes, as jewelry (Ezek 16:11), for architectural ornamentation (1Kgs 7:17), and in assembling the priestly vestments (Exod 28:14). Later, chains were used to bind people (Mark 5:3-4; Acts 12:6-7), replacing fetters and ropes.
