Carchemish

Kahr´kuh-mish

A city on the Euphrates River in northern Syria, about sixty miles northeast of Aleppo. In the first millennium BCE, Pharaoh Neco encountered Josiah at Carchemish before the two engaged in battle on the plain of Megiddo (2Chr 35:20; 2Chr 35:22). In 605 BCE, Nebuchadnezzar defeated Egypt there, and Babylonia assumed control of the region (Jer 46:2). This event was a turning point in the prophecies of Jeremiah (Jer 25:1-13).
