caravan


A mixed company of travelers, usually fairly large for the purpose of safety, which included merchants and their pack animals, who regularly traversed the trade routes to oversee the transport of their goods. Biblical references to caravans include a caravan of Ishmaelites in (Gen 37:25); the endangered caravan traffic due to the unstable political conditions in the period of the judges in (Judg 5:6); the caravan trade in Edom in (Job 6:18-19); and the caravans of Dedanites in Arabia in (Isa 21:13).
