Calvary

Kal´vuh-ree

The site of Jesus’s crucifixion. The Gospels record both the Semitic name of this site, Golgotha, and a translation, “Place of the Skull” (Matt 27:33; Mark 15:22; Luke 23:33; John 19:17). The name Calvary derives from the Vulgate’s Latin translation of this word (calvaria). The site may have been so named because of its habitual use for executions or on account of its physical appearance.
