calf

A young offspring of a cow. The calf is used in the Bible as a general symbol for heathen idol worship, as in the story of the golden calf in (Exod 32). But in Israel the calf was also an appropriate sacrifice (Lev 9:2; Lev 9:8) as a sin offering. It served as food for special occasions as well (Luke 15:22-24).
