brook

The bed of a stream or river generally dry or nearly dry during the summer months, but sporadically or continuously filled with water from the rains during the winter. The land of Canaan had numerous such watercourses (Deut 8:7; Deut 10:7; Lev 11:9-10). Well-known brooks of the Bible include the Zered (Num 21:12), the Arnon (Deut 2:24), the Jabbok (Deut 2:37), the Kanah (Josh 17:9), the Kishon (Judg 4:7), the Sorek (Judg 16:4), the Besor (1Sam 30:9), the Kidron (1Kgs 2:37; John 18:1), the Cherith (1Kgs 17:3), and the Brook of Egypt, Canaan’s southern boundary (Num 34:5).
