Beth-peor

Beth-pee´or; Heb., “temple of Peor”

A settlement on the western edge of the Moabite plateau, part of the territory assigned to the tribe of Reuben (Josh 13:20). Just before their invasion of Canaan, the Israelites camped “in the valley opposite Beth-peor,” where Moses recounted their long journey and repeated Israel’s covenant obligations (Deut 3:29; Deut 4:46). Shortly thereafter, Moses viewed the promised land from Mt. Pisgah, died, and was buried in the vicinity of Beth-peor (Deut 34:1-6).
