Bi-ri´uh; Heb., “in misery” or “in misfortune”; see 1 Chron. 7:23
1 A son of Asher; he was among those who went with Jacob to Egypt at Joseph’s invitation (Gen 46:17). He became the head of a family group (Beriites) who later left Egypt in the exodus with Moses (Num 26:44). 2 A son of Ephraim, born after two other sons, Ezer and Elead, were killed by the Philistines in a livestock raid against Gath; his name reflects the mourning for those killed (1Chr 7:23). 3 A Benjaminite clan leader who lived at Aijalon and was successful in fighting the Philistines at Gath (1Chr 8:13; 1Chr 8:16). Some scholars think he may be the same as 2, reflecting a family group of mixed Ephraimite and Benjaminite origins. 4 A Levite, the son of Shimei of the Gershonite clan (1Chr 23:10-11).
