(Jer 37:21) speaks of a “street of the bakers,” where those engaged in this trade must have had their shops. In (Gen 40), the chief baker and cup bearer of Pharaoh, important functionaries at court, are imprisoned with Joseph. In (1Sam 8:13), when Samuel details the abuses of royal power that will obtain in monarchical Israel, he says, “[The king] will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.”
