One engaged in the process of preparing bread and other food in ovens. Although baking was a normal daily activity of women engaged in the preparation of meals, the specialized profession of baker developed in urban centers. (Jer 37:21) speaks of a “street of the bakers,” where those engaged in this trade must have had their shops. In (Gen 40), the chief baker and cup bearer of Pharaoh, important functionaries at court, are imprisoned with Joseph. In (1Sam 8:13), when Samuel details the abuses of royal power that will obtain in monarchical Israel, he says, “[The king] will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.”
