Baalah

Bah´uh-luh

A feminine form of the Semitic word baal (“master”), the name of the Semitic fertility god; it means “the place of Baal.” 1 Another name for Kiriath-jearim, a city on the northern border of Judah (Josh 15:9-10) where David kept the Ark of the Covenant before moving it to Jerusalem (1Chr 13:6). The site is identified as modern Deir el-Azar or Tel Qiryat Yearim, about eight miles west and slightly north of Jerusalem. Baalah is also called Kiriath-baal (Heb., “the city of Baal,” Josh. 15:60) and Baale-Judah (2Sam 6:2). 2 A city on the southern border of Judah, possibly the same one elsewhere called Balah (Josh 19:3) and Bilhah (1Chr 4:29) and given to the tribe of Simeon. The site is not known. 3 A mountain on the northern border of Judah near Ekron (Josh 15:11).
