Az´muh-veth; Heb., “death is strong”
1 One of David’s fighting men (2Sam 23:31). 2 A Benjaminite, descendant of Saul’s son Jonathan (1Chr 8:36). 3 The father of Jaziel and Pelet, two of Saul’s kinsmen from Benjamin who joined David at Ziklag (1Chr 12:3). 4 The son of Adiel; overseer of the royal storehouses under King David (1Chr 27:25). 5 A small family group (“descendants of Azmaveth”) who returned with Zerubbabel from the Babylonian captivity (Ezra 2:24). Some scholars see the variant Beth-azmaveth in a parallel list (Neh 7:28) as indicating a town where the returning exiles settled rather than a family group. 6 A village of the postexilic community; identified with the modern Ras-Dhukeir or El-Hizma, about five miles northeast of Jerusalem (Neh 12:29).
