A person who reads the influence of the stars on human and terrestrial affairs, supposedly foretelling events by the positions of the planets and stars. Belief that the stars influence human affairs appears occasionally in the OT (Judg 5:20; Job 38:33). It is generally associated with apostasy (Isa 47:13-14) or with the gentile nations (Dan 1:20; Dan 2:2; Dan 2:10). The magi (Matt 2:1-12) were led to Jesus by observation of an unusual astronomical phenomenon at the time of his birth.
