ashes

What is left after a fire, similar in appearance to dust, with which they are often mentioned. Ashes signify destruction (Ezek 28:18; Mal 4:3; 2Pet 2:6) and are contrasted with glory (Isa 61:3). Sitting on them and putting them on one’s head were rituals of mourning and repentance (2Sam 13:19; Isa 58:5; Jer 6:26). Ashes are also mentioned as symbolic of insignificance (Gen 18:27).
