Artemis


Ahr´tuh-mis

of the Ephesians (i-fee´zhuhnz), a goddess widely worshiped in antiquity throughout the Hellenistic and Roman world. The goddess is portrayed with numerous breasts (or possibly eggs) as symbols of fertility, a turret crown, and a long skirt with bands of animals and birds in relief. The Temple to Artemis in Ephesus was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. A perceived threat of Christian expansion to the more commercial aspects of Artemis worship forms a background for the narrative in (Acts 19:23-41).
