Ariel

Air´ee-uhl

1 One of the leading men summoned by Ezra (Ezra 8:16). 2 In (2Sam 23:20) and (1Chr 11:22), either a personal name or a common name meaning “heroes” or “altar hearths.” 3 A word translated “altar hearth” in (Ezek 43:15-16). 4 A poetic designation for Jerusalem, apparently derived from the presence of Yahweh’s main altar there (Isa 29:1-2). The plural, translated “the valiant” in the NRSV (Isa 33:7), probably means “inhabitants of Ariel.”
