An´uh-thoth
A levitical town in the tribal territory of Benjamin (Josh 21:18; 1Chr 6:60). Located less than three miles northeast of Jerusalem, Anathoth was the hometown of Jeremiah (Jer 1:1; Jer 11:21-23; Jer 29:27; Jer 32:7-9). Two of David’s warriors, Abiezer (2Sam 23:27; 1Chr 11:28; 1Chr 27:12) and Jehu (1Chr 12:3), were also from the town; and David’s high priest, Abiathar, was banished there by Solomon (1Kgs 2:26). Men of Anathoth were among those who returned from the Babylonian exile (Ezra 2:23; Neh 7:27), at which time the town was resettled (Neh 11:32).
