Anak

Ay´nak

Eponymous ancestor of a people, the Anakim (Deut 1:28; Deut 9:2; Josh 11:21-22), who are also referred to as “Anakites” (Num 13:22, Num 13:33), “descendants of Anak” (Num 13:28) and “sons of Anak” (Josh 15:14; Judg 1:20; Judg 21:11). According to (Num 13:33) the Anakim came from the Nephilim, those of mixed human and divine character (Gen 6:4). (Deut 9:2) reports the Anakim being “strong and tall” and reputedly unbeatable. (Josh 15:13 and Josh 21:11) note Arba as the father of Anak. Joshua also reports that Caleb drove out three of Anak’s descendants (Josh 15:14; Judg 1:20). See also Nephilim.
