amen

Ah-men, ay-men´

A Hebrew word meaning certainty, truthfulness, and faithfulness. Both the OT and NT use it as a liturgical response at the end of psalms and doxologies in which the congregation affirms what has been prayed by saying “Amen,” “So be it.” In the Gospels Jesus often prefaces his teachings with “Amen I say to you,” an affirmation that the NRSV translates “Truly I tell you.”
