Amariah

Am´uh-ri´uh; Heb., “God has spoken” or “God has promised”

1 A Levite, an ancestor of Zadok and Ezra. Two men in one genealogical list (1Chr 6:7; 1Chr 6:11) bear this name: the first is the son of Meraioth and the second the son of Azariah. However, other lists omit one of these (1Chr 6:52; the first). 2 A Levite, the second son of Hebron of the clan of Kohath (1Chr 23:19). 3 The chief priest in Jerusalem during the reign of Jehoshaphat (2Chr 19:11). 4 A Levite who shared the responsibility for distributing the Levites’ portion of the offerings to the levitical cities during the reign of Hezekiah (2Chr 31:15). 5 A Levite who returned from the Babylonian captivity with Zerubbabel (Neh 12:2), possibly the same one who signed the covenant to keep the law (Neh 10:3) and was condemned by Ezra for marriage to a foreign woman (Ezra 10:42), although this identification is not certain. 6 A Judahite who lived in postexilic Jerusalem (Neh 11:4). 7 A family group in postexilic Jerusalem whose leader was Jehohanan (Neh 12:13). 8 A son of (King?) Hezekiah in the lineage of the prophet Zephaniah (Zeph 1:1).
