1 The father of James, one of Jesus’s twelve disciples. That disciple is called “James the son of Alphaeus” to avoid confusion with another disciple, “James the son of Zebedee” (Matt 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:15; Acts 1:13). 2 The father of Levi (also called Matthew) the tax collector (Mark 2:14; Matt 9:9; Luke 5:27).
