Something contrary to proper religion. The Hebrew term recurring in (Lev 11) designates “unclean” creatures that are not to be eaten. Two other Hebrew terms typically refer to foreign gods, their images, or related worship practices (e.g., Deut 27:15; Deut 29:17), NRSV: “detestable things,” NIV: “detestable images”; (1Kgs 11:7; 2Kgs 23:13). They also denote improper ways of worshiping God (Deut 12:31; Deut 17:1) and wicked or unlawful conduct (Lev 18:22; Deut 22:5; Prov 20:23).
