tongues as of fire

A phrase used in (Acts 2:3) to designate one of the dramatic events of the first Pentecost after Jesus’s death and resurrection. The author says that tongues as of fire appeared and rested on each of the apostles. As a result, the apostles began to speak in other languages (Acts 2:4; Acts 2:8). The description brings together the association of fire with divine power.
