sycamore

A tree mentioned in the Bible that is probably to be identified with the mulberry fig. It thrives in warm lowland areas of Palestine and produces a small fruit that is a popular food. The wood, though soft and porous, is quite durable and is therefore often used in the manufacture of furniture and for the construction of buildings.
