Shim´shi; Heb., “sun”

An officer of the Persian court on duty in Palestine (Ezra 4:8, Ezra 4:9, Ezra 4:17, and Ezra 4:23). He endorsed a letter to Artaxerxes, the king of Persia, complaining about Judean postexilic reconstruction work and received official support for its cessation. The work in Jerusalem was resumed later.
