Ji-day´yuh; Heb., “Yah[weh] knows” or “Yah[weh] is praise”
An OT name borne by several Levites; it is difficult to separate these names since some may refer to the same person or family group. 1 A descendant of Aaron and head of the second group of priests (1Chr 24:7); he was probably the ancestral head of one or more of the family groups below. 2 A priest and postexilic inhabitant of Jerusalem; he is called the “son of Joiarib” (Neh 11:10), but in (1Chr 9:10) “son of” is omitted and Joiarib (Jehoiarib) is simply another priest. 3 A Levite who returned from the Babylonian captivity with Zerubbabel (Neh 12:6); however, this verse probably refers to a family group who returned, since Uzzi is given as a family head of Jedaiah (Neh 12:19). 4 A second Levite who returned with Zerubbabel (Neh 12:7); also probably a family group with Nethanel as the leader (Neh 12:21). 5 A family group (“descendants of Jedaiah”) of the clan of Jeshua who returned with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:36; Neh 7:39). This group could be related to either 3 or 4. 6 One of the representative exiles named in a prophecy of Zechariah (Zech 6:10; Zech 6:14). 7 The son of Shimri; a descendant of Simeon (1Chr 4:37). 8 One who helped repair the walls of postexilic Jerusalem (Neh 3:10).
